New Balance Global Marketing Internship: Athlete Seeding and Tennis Championships

Over the summer of 2019, I worked at New Balance conducting a sports marketing internship focused on global tennis and football (soccer). Through this internship I was able to effectively work with my boss and other members within the sports marketing department at New Balance to ship product in a timely manner. One of my main responsibilities was athlete seeding where I packaged, sorted, and organized in-house athlete products previous to shipping specific athletes’ products out with my boss. In order to do this I received the product from my Tennis or Football sports management boss, other colleagues in my department, or directly selected it from our in-house inventory closet, and finally worked with the shipping department each day to get the package out in a timely and efficient manner. These packages were shipped to New Balance sponsored soccer and tennis athletes, and required me to communicate effectively with my boss and other superior employees to achieve organizational goals.

Outside of my immediate boss, I worked with other members within the sports marketing department to organize and send products out for the 2019 New Balance Tennis High School Championships in Ojai, CA. At the event, my superior and I partnered with global marketing at New Balance to provide content on venue marketing branding such as ordering/locating signage, directing placement & execution and social media posts. These tasks included social media posts involved providing product, branding, and other signage for branding and event layout, and keeping timelines for specific social media posts related to the event.

This internship helped me to hone in on my communication and teamwork skills as I had to consistently communicate with my boss and other colleagues in the sports marketing department to ensure the right product was shipped for both individual athletes and for event branding for the Tennis National Championships. Through the Tennis National Championship experience I was able to gain experience into event marketing and realize the importance of teamwork and communication through the event marketing efforts as well as the set up, assembly, and breakdown of the event itself. I received unbelievable real-world business experience through these two experiences that showed me the importance of communication, teamwork, and focus in order to achieve my team’s goals.

Extracurricular: Men’s Varsity Lacrosse Team

The year before I entered my freshman year as a member of the lacrosse team at Muhlenberg College, the team’s overall record was 2-12 in the spring of 2017. Since becoming a member of the team my freshman year in the fall of 2017, I have worked diligently with my teammates and overall best friends to transform the culture of the team from one where people make excuses to a team of like-minded individuals working together to win a Centennial conference championship. In order to do this I have led by example by holding myself to a higher standard so that other teammates raise their standards as well. In addition I have actively encouraged more of my teammates to train off the field and outside of practice in order for them to excel on an individual level and most importantly for the team to excel and progress forward towards our goals. In 2019 we improved our record to 10-6 and increased our in conference won-games to three versus one from 2018.
